Compare a remote visit with care in a room

Telehealth means discussing care by video, phone or an online exchange. Before choosing it, ask what happens if that format leaves a question unanswered.

Match the format to the assessment

The national group of state medical boards recommends arranging tests or sending you to another clinician if a remote visit leaves needed information missing.

That recommendation is guidance for state boards rather than a law by itself.

Ask whether the clinician will review your existing records.

Ask how later questions reach the clinician.

Ask where an examination would take place if one is needed.

Ask whether a referral changes the fee you already paid.

Your location matters

Check the rules for your location during the appointment; the clinician needs permission there, as checked on September 26, 2026.

Some states offer a sign-up process for remote clinicians licensed elsewhere instead of requiring a full local licence, as checked on September 26, 2026.

State rules also allow limited exceptions to that licensing requirement.

Give the state where you will actually be sitting.

Request the clinician’s full name and licence details.

Ask what changes if you travel before a follow-up visit.

Leave room for a different answer

The medical boards’ remote-care guidance also gives patients room to ask their own follow-up questions.

Ask why the proposed product fits the concern you described.

Ask what could lead to a decision against prescribing.

Compare that answer with what an in-person visit would offer.
