Plan the cost

Ask your health plan about the exact proposal

Take the product name, proposed use and itemised quote to the plan. Ask for a written answer that separates the visit, tests and medicine.

Request the coverage decision in plain words

Use these as questions, not assumptions about what a plan will pay.

  • Is the consultation covered, and does the clinician need to be in the plan’s network?
  • Are any tests billed separately?
  • Does the plan consider this exact product for this proposed use?
  • What approval, if any, is needed before a charge is made?
  • What remains my responsibility if the request is declined?

Keep an account benefit separate from medical suitability

A health savings account uses the initials HSA.

The initials FSA refer to a flexible spending arrangement.

These accounts hold money set aside for medical expenses.

These accounts may cover an expense for an illness a doctor has diagnosed, under the tax rules checked on September 26, 2026.

Spending only to support general health does not qualify under those rules.

The person who manages the account may ask for a medical-necessity letter: a written explanation of why this care is needed.

  • Ask the administrator what documents it requires.
  • Request an answer about the actual expense rather than the package’s label.
  • Do not treat possible reimbursement as a clinical recommendation.

Bring the answer back to the cost comparison

Keep the reply with the quote so the payment route and the service are clear.

  • Mark charges the plan has answered in writing.
  • Leave unresolved charges open on the worksheet.
  • Ask who can clarify the remaining items before a commitment.
