Compare the substance and the result
The human reports used a different substance
Reports of longer life in people used epithalamin, the cattle extract.
Some groups also had a second extract.
The reports’ short summaries say little about who went into each group or how the groups were compared.
- Ask for the ingredient name from the methods, the part that explains what the researchers did.
- Ask whether another treatment was given at the same time.
- Do not carry a result across to a different substance without an explanation.
The mouse result needs its full shape
In a female-mouse study, epitalon did not change average lifespan, although the longest-lived mice lived longer.
That animal finding is not a demonstrated human lifespan benefit.
- Ask whether a headline refers to the average or only the longest-lived animals.
- Ask why the animal finding is relevant to the proposed care.
Return to a goal that can be discussed
FDA means the US medicines agency.
The human epitalon studies described by FDA did not measure lifespan.
- Describe the concern that made the anti-aging offer appealing.
- Ask how that concern would be assessed without assuming epitalon is the answer.
- Ask what evidence would be needed to support a longer-life claim.
